Casey Morgan (2024)

Casey Morgan is a villain in the Ruby Redfort series and an employee of Spectrum. She is the true main antagonist of the series, as she had targeted Ruby for years.

Alter ego Casey Morgan[]

Casey Morgan's alter ego is Buzz. Buzz is the Spectrum receptionist and spends a lot of time sitting in the middle of a round desk covered in telephones of lots of different colours, making and receiving calls.

Buzz was thought to stand for Brenda Ulla Zane as revealed in the final book, Blink and You Die, but was in truth an acronym for Baker (Bradley), Uggerlimb (Loveday Byrd aka LB) and Zachery (Art Hitchen aka Hitch) - all the agents she wanted dead.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

Casey Morgan was born in 1930 in Colwin City. She joined the Spectrum JSRP when she decoded a recruitment code on a cereal packet. She was not technically allowed on the programme, as it was only for boys, but she changed her birth certificate when she applied and pretended to be a boy. She wanted to be the best agent at Spectrum, but Bradley Baker had already taken that title. Because of this, Casey became envious of Bradley Baker, so much so that she even tried to kill him. He was saved by LB (AKA Loveday Byrd Uggerlimb) which made her the very first female Spectrum agent - Casey was angered because she was reduced to dressing up as a boy to get into the Spectrum program.

Adulthood[]

Casey had been attempting to kill Ruby from the start, so that she could get hold of the code that lay in Ruby's eyes which would decode the 8 Key's tag. She had attempted to murder Ruby even before Ruby had joined Spectrum, by trying to lure her with a yellow balloon and a puzzle on the back of a cereal box. She was unsuccessful, as although Ruby got the balloon, she was only interested in the tag of the balloon - and also because her father forgot to post the solved puzzle.

Throughout all of the books, she has been working undercover as Spectrum 8's receptionist - convenient as it allowed her to intercept important messages and intervene where necessary.

Ruby Redfort[]

Ruby often likens Buzz to a mushroom- referring to Buzz's "fashion sense" and the way the table is positioned around her. She (Ruby) attempts to make conversation with her occasionally. Also, Ruby is occasionally annoyed by Buzz's pedantic responses - stating the literal and exact answer - which she classifies as "a very Buzz [type of] answer". In the final book, when Ruby is suspicious that Hitch is Casey Morgan, Buzz pretends to agree with Ruby and offers help which Ruby accepts. Ruby confesses to Buzz that she doesn't know if Buzz likes her, or indeed likes anyone, but she trusts Buzz to help her.

LB[]

It is impressed upon that LB thought that Buzz was an efficient receptionist as she was not "chatty".

Identity Reveal and Death[]

In Ruby Redfort, Blink and You Die, Ruby attempts to contact Blacker, SJ, Hitch or any other agent after finding out that the secret to SME is hidden in her eyes. However, all contact systems are down, so she ends up contacting Buzz (unaware of Buzz's alter ego) and asking her to get the contact lenses from the Ghost Files, which will block to the decoding of the message in her eyes. Buzz agrees to meet her at the Eye Ball.^[1] Buzz arrives at the Eye Hospital and Ruby is on her way to meet her, by climbing around the outside of the building, when Hitch arrives. Ruby is unsure who to trust, but when Clancy tells her to go with her gut, she trusts Hitch, and climbs up on to the roof, out of reach of both Buzz and Hitch.^[2] Buzz then makes her way up to the roof and reveals her true identity to Ruby, then tries to get the reading of the code from her eyes.^[3] She makes Ruby take out her contact lenses, and while she is doing so, Mrs Digby comes up behind her and pokes her with a chopstick. Casey turns round in shock and loses her footing, and she falls off the side of the Eye Hospital. She is not seen again in the books, presumably because she died when she fell of the Eye Hospital.
