Destiny 2 Needs to Spill The Beans About One Future Collab (2024)

Key Takeaways

  • Destiny 2 has had collaborations with various pop culture IPs, mainly offering cosmetics instead of playable content.
  • An upcoming collaboration with Arknights was announced in 2023, but there's been no news since then.
  • The Destiny 2 and Arknights crossover was expected to release in 2023 but has not been launched yet, leaving fans in the dark.

Destiny 2 has collaborated with many franchises and video games since its 2017 debut. Although the crossovers in Bungie's live service FPS haven't been as prevalent as in Fortnite or Call of Duty, for example, they still have a pretty significant presence in the game's history. Throughout the years, the hit free-to-play shooter has collaborated with various pop culture IPs, such as Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed, God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Dungeons and Dragons, and even Ghostbusters. So far, the content included in these crossovers has largely amounted to skins, armor sets, and other cosmetics, rather than playable characters or entire side quests, but they've still been a highlight for many Destiny 2 fans.

Bungie hasn't shared much information about its plans for future Destiny 2 crossovers at the time of writing. That being said, there is one upcoming collaboration that the studio has already revealed. Back in April 2023, Bungie announced that it was partnering up with the popular mobile game Arknights for a new Destiny 2 crossover. Unlike past collaborations, however, this one would only take place within Arknights instead of D2. During its unveiling, very little was shown of the collaboration besides a brief CGI teaser trailer, but many fans expected that it would be released sooner rather than later, based off of the precedent set by previous crossovers. More than a year has passed following the announcement, however, and it is still nowhere in sight. It's about time that Bungie tells fans if Destiny 2's collaboration with Arknights will ever see the light of day.

Bungie Should Open Up On Destiny 2's Upcoming Crossover With Arknights

Arknights is a Popular Free-to-Play Mobile Game

For those unfamiliar with it, Arknights is an anime-styled tactical RPG and tower defense hybrid that features heavy gacha game elements. The title, which is free-to-play, was released on Android and iOS in May 2019 in Chinese territories, but eventually made its way to other countries in early 2020. It's developed by the Chinese studio Hypergryph and is published internationally by Yostar. Arknights isn't brought up very often in mainstream gaming circles, especially in the West, but the game has garnered a passionate fanbase worldwide. Hypergryph's popular mobile game has also received multiple adaptations in other mediums, including anime TV shows and even an audio drama.

The Arknights and Destiny 2 Collaboration Could Be Huge, But It's Still Nowhere in Sight

Besides the fact that they both take place in sci-fi settings, Arknights and Destiny 2 share little-to-nothing in common. That's why it was surprising when, during the Arknights 4th Anniversary Livestream in 2023, Hypergryph revealed that it would be working with Bungie to add Destiny 2-themed content to the developer's hit gacha game. Arknights' previous collaborations with other video games, like Rainbow Six Siege and Monster Hunter World, were filled to the brim with new content, such as story missions, playable characters, and skins, so many expected that this Destiny 2 crossover would be pretty meaty as well.

At the time, this upcoming Destiny 2 collaboration was meant to come out on Arknights' Chinese servers sometime in the third quarter of 2023 and receive an international release roughly six months later. Sadly, though, the collaboration hasn't been launched in any territory yet, and both Bungie and Hypergryph have been entirely silent on the matter. At this point, it's possible that it may have been canceled or shelved indefinitely.

Perhaps there were some complications that arose between Hypergryph and Bungie, and maybe the two live service game developers weren't able to work something out content-wise. On the other hand, there's also the chance that this crossover is being saved for a big occasion, like Arknights' 6th anniversary event later next year. Whatever the cause behind its delay may be, it would be great if Bungie and Hypergryph clued fans in on this mysterious Destiny 2 collaboration sometime in the near future.
