How to Make Fairy Dough - the Making Life (2024)

Today’s project was inspired by a friend. I told my friends on Facebook that I wanted to make playdough, but since there has been a shortage of flour in our area, it seemed maybe wasteful to use it up. She suggested making fairy dough and said that she had made it in preschool classes.

Fairy dough requires only two ingredients, and there are other names for it — unicorn dough, fairy dust dough, super soft play-dough. I’ll stick with fairy dough because that’s how it was introduced to me.

For those of you who are gluten-free, I thought this was a really good alternative to regular homemade playdough. Not only that, but it smells really good.

OK, let’s get started.

Here’s what you need for this project:

Here’s what’s optional:

Step #1: Measure Your Ingredients

This dough is super easy to make. You don’t have to heat anything up and it only takes two ingredients (if you don’t count the food coloring and the glitter which are optional).

The ratio is two parts cornstarch, one part conditioner.

Put your ingredients together in a bowl.

Step #2: Mix Your Ingredients and Add Sparkle

The next step is to start mixing up the cornstarch and conditioner. We also took this time to add food coloring and glitter.

Step #3: Mix the Fairy Dough With Your Hands

Once you get a good mix started in the bowl, it’s time to get the kids to start mixing it up with their hands. It may be at this point that you find your dough is a bit too sticky (as it was with one of my daughters’). If that’s the case, you can add more cornstarch to it. If it’s too dry, add a little more conditioner.

PS. The fairy dough project is a bit messy — but it’s easy enough to clean up. You’ve been warned! The fairy dust has a tendency to get on everything.
