馃崝 Ingredients for this keto salmon patties recipe

Here's a list of ingredients you need to make the low-carb salmon patties:

  • 1 (14.5-ounce) canned salmon, flaked
  • 陆 yellow onion, minced
  • 陆 cup almond flour (we use Bob's Red Mill)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 avocado, flesh removed and minced
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 陆 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 录 cup unsalted butter or avocado oil for dairy-free

Ingredient substitutions

Don't worry if you don't like or have the exact ingredients. We have some keto-friendly alternatives for you:

  • Unsalted butter: Try an equal amount of ghee or avocado oil if you want a dairy-free option.
  • Yellow onion: If you don't have yellow onion, swap it with red or purple onion.
  • Avacado: Not a fan of avocado? You can omit or substitute it with sour cream or keto-friendly mayonnaise.
  • Canned salmon: You can use pre-cooked salmon instead of canned one. Alternatively, you can use fresh salmon without the skin. Just mince it in a food processor before proceeding.

Additional ingredients

Customize your dish with these optional ingredients:

  • Fresh herbs: Sprinkle chopped fresh dill or parsley into the patty mixture for a lovely, fresh tone.
  • Zest and juice of a lemon: Brighten up your patties by adding the zest and juice of a lemon to the mix.
  • Garlic: Add a clove or two of minced garlic to the mix to elevate the flavor profile.
  • Cajun or Creole seasoning: If you're in the mood for a bit of spice, mix in some Cajun or Creole seasoning.
  • Parmesan cheese: Sprinkle some freshly grated Parmesan atop the patties during the last minute of cooking. It adds a savory crust.
  • Chopped greens: Add chopped baby spinach or kale to your patties to incorporate more greens into your meal.

To make this keto salmon patties recipe, you need the following tools:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Large cast-iron skillet
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Paper towels

Tools substitute options

  • Cast-iron skillet: If you don't have a cast-iron skillet, you can use a regular frying or grill pan. Using a grill pan will leave grill marks on your patties, giving them a more appealing appearance.

How to make Keto Salmon Patties: step-by-step guide

Chef's pro tip

Drain the canned salmon well before flaking it to prevent a soupy mixture. Draining gets rid of excess moisture and helps the patties maintain their shape. But if you still end up with a wet mix after draining, add almond flour, a tablespoon at a time, until you achieve the right consistency.

What to serve with keto salmon patties?

These salmon patties make a great dinner on their own but are also delicious on salads or when used as a burger patty. You can pair them with other keto-friendly side dishes for a complete meal.

  • Mediterranean Asparagus: The slight bitterness of asparagus pairs beautifully with the fatty salmon, creating a balanced flavor profile.
  • Zucchini noodles (Zoodles): Zoodles provide a pasta-like texture without carbs. Mix them into this fish dish for a filling meal.
  • Creamy coleslaw: The creaminess and crunch of coleslaw complement the texture and taste of the salmon patties.
  • Creamy Jalape帽o Sauce: Serve the patties with spicy Jalapeno sauce if you like fiery flavors.

How to make it healthier

  • Use organic products: If possible, use organic produce for salmon, eggs, and avocados.
  • Reduce sodium: If you're watching your sodium intake, decrease the amount of added sea salt. The salmon and avocado already bring plenty of flavor to the table!

Time-saving tips

  • Whip up a double or triple batch of the delicious salmon mixture, shape it into patties, and freeze the extras for convenient and speedy meals on busy days.

What can I prepare ahead of time?

  • Prep your onions and avocado in advance. Mince and refrigerate them in airtight containers until you're ready to use.

Storage and reheating instructions

Storage instructions

  • Refrigerator: Let the patties cool and refrigerate in an airtight container. They will remain fresh and tasty for 3-4 days.
  • Freezer: Wrap the patties in plastic wraps and freeze them in a freezer-safe bag. They will keep for 2-3 months. Just thaw them in the fridge before reheating.

Reheating instructions

  • Oven: Preheat your oven to 375掳F (190掳C). Place the patties on a baking sheet and heat for 10-15 minutes.
  • Stove: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add a touch of avocado oil, and heat the patties for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they're warm.

Frequently asked questions

We don't recommend using bone-in salmon. We know the packing says you can eat the little tiny bones, and we have in the past, and we did not find it fun nor appetizing.

Be gentle when flipping your patties in the skillet. Give them enough time to form a nice crust on the bottom before you turn them over. This helps them hold together better.

Yes, they are great for meal prepping! Place a piece of parchment onto a sheet pan and place the uncooked patties on it. Freeze for 1-2 hours, then transfer to a freezer-safe container.

If your patty mix is too dry, add more avocado or a tablespoon of sugar-free mayo to add some extra moisture.

Made this tonight and husband ate 6 of them! I made some a couple weeks back with a different recipe and he liked those, but tonight says these are so much better. A couple changes I had to make; I had no avocado so I used a half a cup of our avocado mayo in its place. Also, I don't have 14oz cans of tuna- ours are 6oz. I tried it with 2 cans and they were just too soft so I added a third can for a total of 18 oz and they turned out fantastic. I didn't squeeze out all the moisture so that may be why 18oz was better than 12oz. In any case, these are keepers and i can't wait to make some with the actual avocado 馃榾

Do you need the almond flour? Can you use something else? Almond flour is not something I have ever bought and I鈥檇 have to go to Whole Foods or some other specialty store to find it

      • Cast Iron Keto says

Hi Lena, every grocery store will have almond flour, not just specialty stores. You could try subbing crushed pork rinds but really, I'd stick to the tested recipe for the best results.

Has anyone else made these and the mixture is a a soupy mess that can't easily be formed into patties? Two eggs seems like a lot... maybe I should have drained my salmon? :/ Not sure what to do from here... add more almond flour... or breadcrumbs?

    Reply

    • Cast Iron Keto says

Hi Lilly, yes you should have drained your salmon. I'll add that to the recipe to prevent any confusion, thanks!
