What time can you put out garbage in NYC? ›

Place your items curbside after 6 PM (if in a bin with a secured lid) or after 8 PM (if in bags) and before midnight the evening before your scheduled pickup. If your pickup is before 4 PM, you must retrieve bins by 9 PM. If your pickup is after 4 PM, you must retrieve bins by 9 AM the following morning.

NYC residents can get free curbside removal of large items – no appointment necessary. Set your large items out at the curb next to your trash. You can set out up to six items (bags, bundles) per collection day. Pick-up appointments are no longer offered and cannot be scheduled.

Plastic can be mixed with metal and glass recyclables, but never with paper recyclables. Place plastic items in clear, untinted bags or blue-labeled recycling bins with a tight-fitting lid. Clear, untinted bags must be between 13 and 55 gallons in size and weigh no more than 60 pounds when placed out for collection.

It's a misconception that greasy pizza boxes can't be recycled. The Department of Sanitation says residents can put them with paper recycling. If you live in a Curbside Composting area, they can go in your brown bin.

Set-Out Rules

Bulk items placed out for collection must not be placed in the street, extend in front of another property, or impede pedestrian traffic. In addition, items that are left out on private property are "unserviceable” and cannot be picked up by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).
