The Lorax is a 2012 3D-animated musical-comedy film, based on Dr. Seuss's book of the same name. It is about a boy named Ted from Thneedville who learns about the tale of the Once-ler. The Once-ler had left his home in search of appropriate material for his own Thneed invention, discovering a land full of Truffula trees. Meeting the Lorax, who speaks for the trees, the Once-ler strikes up a brief friendship with him when he promises not to cut down another Truffula tree after the first. However, the Thneed he makes with the Truffula leaves explodes with success, the word spreading to the Once-ler's family and giving him the money to cut down trees and produce more Thneeds at a faster rate. Riding on the high of his success and greed, the Once-ler becomes progressively more greedy - thus, the Greed-ler - and the mass production of Thneeds pollutes the air, rivers, and land. Eventually, the last Truffula tree is cut down, halting production and leaving the Once-ler miserable and for broke.

The movie has heavy pro-environment anti-capitalist messages.

Fandom

The Lorax fandom is most infamously known for its Oncest fandom, a slash pairing between the Once-ler and the Greed-ler. Since it is selfcest, it is often referred to as Oncest. This fandom was incredibly active soon after the movie was released, almost exclusively fanart on Tumblr, with a slightly smaller community on DeviantArt, and some fanfiction on AO3 and Wattpad. Of course, there is also a community for fanvids on Youtube.

Ships

The juggernaut pairing is Oncest. (More about it can be read on the pairing page.)

Some also ship the Once-ler and the Lorax. The primary het pairing is Norma/Once-ler, the Once-ler with Ted's grandmother, Norma, even though they have not interacted on screen. Many speculate that they knew each other when they were younger, though, and some even believe that the Once-ler may be Ted's grandfather.
