EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Eglin pharmacy staff will host a town hall March 26 from 5-6 p.m. in the Hospital pharmacy lobby to discuss a pilot program that affects TRICARE For Life beneficiaries.

A new test program requiring TFL beneficiaries to use the TRICARE pharmacy home delivery service or a military pharmacy to fill prescriptions for selectmedications began March 14. The town hall will be an open forum to review medications, answer questions and register for home delivery medications.

This new program was a provision of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act aimed to help curb the rising cost of medical care. The average cost of filling a 30-day prescription is $20 at a medical treatment facility, $33 as mail order, and $67 at a network pharmacy.

Affected Eglin TFL beneficiaries received letters in February notifying them of the new program. The beneficiaries have two 30-day refills of their prescriptions covered at a retail pharmacy before they are responsible for 100 percent of the cost if they wish to fill at a retail pharmacy.

"Home delivery is an excellent choice for our Eglin TRICARE beneficiaries to get their medications," said Maj. Julie Meek, director of pharmacy operations. "Not only is it a less expensive and convenient choice, but home delivery contributes to better health by making sure you never run out of your medication. If you decide to use the Eglin Satellite Pharmacy, please check the formulary to make sure your prescription is available."

Medications available on the formulary can be found by following the link to the online formulary on our hospital website or by calling the pharmacy at 883-8000 during business hours.

Eglin has the most medication options on formulary on the Emerald Coast, allowing the convenience of TRICARE patients in the surrounding area to be able to fill most of their maintenance and outpatient medications at no cost and up to a 90-day supply, according to Meek.

"Both TRICARE pharmacy home delivery and military pharmacies are safe, convenient and easy to use," said Meek. "Switching prescriptions from a retail pharmacy to home delivery can save TRICARE beneficiaries up to $152 a year in co-pays for each prescription, and even more when switching to a military pharmacy. Beneficiaries can also save by asking their doctor to write them a prescription for a generic version of their medication or a formulary alternative."

For the most recent information about the pilot or to sign up for e-alerts with the latest updates, visit www.tricare.mil/tflpilot. Beneficiaries are encouraged to visit the Eglin pharmacy with questions, or call the TRICARE pharmacy contractor, Express Scripts, at 877-882-3335 to switch to home delivery.
