Olivia Rodrigo was sorely missed on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art tonight. Despite attending the renowned fashion event for the past three years in a row, the Grammy winner was a no-show for the 2024 Met Gala.
While Rodrigo hasn’t yet publicly explained her absence from fashion’s biggest night, it’s safe to assume she’s just dealing with a busy schedule, due to her sold-out Guts World Tour. After wrapping up the first half of the tour’s U.S. leg in late April, the “Vampire” singer is now scheduled to roll out the first of two back-to-back shows at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro arena in Scotland tomorrow. Factoring in the time it takes for travel and rehearsals, as well as the little amount of time between the Met Gala and that first U.K. show, it was always unlikely Rodrigo would be able to make it to tonight’s event.
Rodrigo has attended the Met Gala three times so far, with her most recent appearance occurring in 2023. At the time, she followed the Karl Lagerfeld–dedicated dress code in an incredible black-and-white dress covered in rosettes, courtesy of Thom Browne.
The Guts World Tour, slated to run through mid-August, will take the singer to other major European cities like Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Madrid, before she closes it out by returning to North America. Her last show is set for Inglewood, California, on August 17.
Rodrigo opened up about her touring experience in a 2023 interview with The New Yorker.
“My favorite songs to sing are the really angry ones, especially on tour,” she said. “I love looking out in the audience, and sometimes I’ll see these girls and they’re so young, they’re seven or eight, and they’re screaming these angry songs and getting so hyped up and so enraged, and I just think that’s the coolest thing ever. That’s not something you’d see on the street, but it’s so cool that people get to express all those emotions through music.”
